[Maybe the Don would say something like that (at least partially in jest) but coming from Hamelin...]
I'm afraid I don't know anything about that. If he was working with Hamelin, this is the first I've heard of it.
[He doesn't really like that idea, but at this point he can't really rule it out. He doesn't know enough about what Raven and Alexei were doing in secret, since no one told him about the murder!!]
Though I suppose it's possible he was a disappointment for other reasons - such as not playing the role he was supposed to in this story.
That's what I was wondering. And you see why I wanted to ask you about it, since you're from his world and all. My only other choice was Alexei, and after that...
[... well. Surely Yeager can understand why he's not in any hurry to want to trust Alexei.]
So you don't know anything? Or maybe I should say, there wasn't anything about him from back home that would make Hamelin think of him like that?
I agree that it's not a good idea to ask the Commandant about that right now. He may have more information, but so soon after losing Raven would be a bad idea.
[Yeager's not handling it well, but Alexei's handling it even worse!!]
Unfortunately, he's the only one who would know anything more. Raven worked very closely with him, from what I understand. He was acting on the Commandant's orders for Morgan and Pericles' deaths, after all.
[So if anyone knows what Hamelin meant by that, it'd be Alexei.]
It certainly is possible they never told me, since I'm not precisely the most trustworthy individual on even the best of days. I've certainly never been the Commandant's favorite!
[... oh the irony of Yeager glibly declaring himself a not exactly trustworthy person while Marcus is here trying to gauge that exact fact for himself. But points for honesty, he supposes.]
Yeah, that's what I figured. Even if he does know something, I don't wanna go poking the hornet's nest right now. But thanks for confirming that much.
[Another silence falls, this one much longer than the first as Marcus weighs a few options in his mind. Well. He can test the waters here, so to speak.]
... what if I told you that I'm actually pretty sure what Hamelin meant by that?
Nah, nothing like that. I know a lot of things, but the information isn't mine to share without asking for permission from the person it comes from. To put it simply, I guess you could say I'm trying to decide if it's safe to ask whether they'll share it with you too.
Understandable! It does seem like there's quite a lot going on here... But of course, that's ultimately up to you and them!
[He's not going to be offended if Marcus and this mysterious other person back off, because honestly, look at him. He's sus. That's just how it goes!!]
[That gets him to laugh and he holds up a hand as if in surrender.]
Ja, ja, fair enough! I'll offer you this much, then: I want Hamelin dead after what he pulled in the last trial, and my wish no longer matters, so I have no reason to kill.
[It's just his word, certainly, but it's confidently said. So he's going to be here for awhile, at least!!]
Besides, perhaps you could use another willing hand to fight whenever we reach the final act!
[He just wants to go back to fighting things, is that too much to ask.....]
[Now Marcus laughs too, putting his hands on his hips and throwing his head back. Yeah, he's got a fairly good feeling about this now so... congrats, Yeager, you get his vote.
At last he sobers up somewhat and crosses his arms over his chest, fixing Yeager with a gaze that pretty clearly conveys "let's talk business here."]
That makes two of us, then. I'm not about to kill for my wish, either-- I don't think I need to say for whose sake it is, and killing someone over it would go against the whole purpose of the wish in the first place.
[In other words? They're on the same page about this.]
And I won't lie, the combat ability was a pretty big draw, too. I owe you one for being willing to demonstrate it to me earlier.
[Naturally, it gets a mock bow from Yeager, because of course he's Like This.]
I greatly enjoy fighting and it's been quite some time... I never thought I'd say I miss monsters, but at least they were halfway entertaining to fight! I'm pleased you approve, of course~

[He'll go quiet after he says that, just waiting to see how Yeager is going to react.]

Do you now? Were you working with him, then?
[It's not an accusation, just a question. There's a lot more going on here than he knows at the moment, so all he can really do is guess.]
